01 Create a Free Canon Account ~2 min

Canon hosts the activation tool on their developer site. Don't let the name put you off — it's free and open to everyone.

  1. Go to Canon's developer site for your region:
Americas  |  Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia
  2. Scroll to the bottom of the page — you'll see a line that says "If you have not yet created an account, visit the Registration page to sign up". Click that link.
  3. Choose the free Essential tier — no payment needed
  4. Confirm your email address

That's it. You'll have immediate access to the activation tool.

02 Download & Activate ~5 min
  1. Log in to the Canon developer site you registered on
  2. Go to the CCAPI downloads page:
Americas  |  Europe, Middle East, Africa & Asia
  3. Download the CCAPI Activation Tool for your system (Mac or Windows) and install it
  4. Turn on your camera and connect it to your computer via USB
  5. Open the activation tool and click Activate — it takes a few seconds
Done permanently. Your camera remembers this setting forever, even through firmware updates. You can uninstall the activation tool — you won't need it again unless you get another Canon camera.
03 Set Up Camera WiFi ~3 min

Now configure your camera to create its own WiFi network that FrameCoach can connect to.

  1. On your camera, go to Menu → Communication Functions
  2. Find Camera Control API (this option appears after activation)
  3. Set a nickname for your camera (e.g., "My R6")
  4. Disable authentication — FrameCoach connects on a private WiFi network between just your phone and camera
  5. Select Camera Access Point mode — this makes your camera create its own WiFi hotspot

Your camera will display an SSID (network name), password, and IP address. You'll need these for FrameCoach.

Tip: Take a photo of this screen with your phone so you have the details handy.
04 Connect in FrameCoach ~1 min

First time:

  1. Open FrameCoach and tap Add Camera
  2. Select Canon
  3. Enter the SSID and password from your camera's screen
  4. Enter the IP address shown on your camera (port is usually 8080)
  5. FrameCoach connects — you're ready to shoot

Every time after that:

  1. Turn on your camera (it broadcasts WiFi automatically)
  2. Open FrameCoach and tap your saved Canon profile
  3. Start shooting

That's it. Your Canon camera is now set up for wireless control with FrameCoach. The whole process takes about a minute each time you're on set.

Troubleshooting

Connected to WiFi but camera not responding
Make sure you completed the one-time activation (Step 2). Check that Camera Control API is enabled in your camera's menu, and verify the IP address matches what your camera shows on screen. Try turning your camera off and on — it will re-broadcast its WiFi.
Can't find the Camera Control API menu option
This option only appears after activation. Go back to Step 2 and make sure you ran the activation tool with your camera connected via USB. Also check that your camera's firmware is up to date.
WiFi keeps disconnecting
Stay within WiFi range of your camera (~10-15 metres). Some cameras have a WiFi power-saving mode that disconnects after inactivity — check your camera's WiFi settings and disable auto-off if available.
Can't connect to the activation tool via USB
Try a different USB cable — some cables are charge-only and don't transfer data. Make sure your camera is turned on and set to the correct USB mode. On Mac, you may need to allow the app in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
