# Support

Find answers about FrameCoach, supported cameras, and how to get help.

## Supported Cameras

FrameCoach connects to cameras wirelessly over WiFi. The models listed below are compatible based on manufacturer wireless support. Compatibility may vary depending on firmware version and network conditions. We're actively working to bring support to all major camera brands and models. If you experience issues connecting, please [contact us](https://www.framecoach.io/support#contact).

### Sony

Connects via WiFi Direct over Sony's Camera Remote API. The bodies below speak the protocol FrameCoach supports today. The A6400 is fully verified end-to-end; the rest are protocol-compatible and pass community testing, but specific behaviour can vary by firmware. Some older bodies may need a firmware update.

### Sony — coming soon (in development)

These newer Sony bodies use Sony's Access Authentication / PTP-over-IP protocol, which FrameCoach doesn't yet speak. They're on the active roadmap — wireless connection support is in development. We'll update this page (and email beta testers) the moment they're ready.

### Canon

Canon cameras need a quick one-time setup before connecting wirelessly. [Follow our Canon setup guide →](https://www.framecoach.io/canon-setup)

Connects via WiFi after a one-time USB activation (~10 minutes). Once set up, connecting on set takes about a minute.

### Firmware notes

Keep your camera on the latest firmware for the best chance of a clean connection. A few model-specific things worth knowing:

- **Canon EOS R6 Mark II** — firmware **1.7.0** (May 2026) formally added CCAPI. Older firmware will not connect. Update before running the [Canon setup](https://www.framecoach.io/canon-setup).
- **Canon EOS R8** — firmware **1.5.0** or later is required for CCAPI. Update before activating.
- **Canon CCAPI activation persists across firmware updates** — once you've activated, you can install future Canon firmware updates without re-running the setup.
- **Sony A6000** — Sony shut down the *PlayMemories Camera Apps* store in 2024. The Smart Remote app needed for wireless control still works on existing installs, but it cannot be reinstalled. **Do not factory-reset an A6000** without checking with us first — a reset will remove Smart Remote and leave the body unable to connect wirelessly.

### Not Yet Supported

- **Panasonic / Lumix** — including S5 II, GH7, GH6, G9 II, S1H and more. On our roadmap.
- **Blackmagic Design** — including Pocket Cinema Camera 4K/6K, Cinema Camera 6K, PYXIS 6K. On our roadmap.
- **RED** — including KOMODO 6K, V-RAPTOR. On our roadmap.
- **Nikon** — including Z6 III, Z8, Zf, Z9. We're exploring options.
- **Fujifilm** — including X-H2S, X-T5, X-S20, X100VI. Not currently feasible — we're monitoring for changes.

## Frequently Asked Questions

**Do I need an external camera?**

Not always. FrameCoach works with the iPhone's built-in cameras directly — open the app and shoot. For mirrorless and DSLR workflows, FrameCoach also connects wirelessly to supported Sony and Canon bodies.

**How does FrameCoach connect to my camera?**

Your camera creates a WiFi hotspot. FrameCoach connects to it wirelessly. Your phone uses cellular data for AI analysis at the same time.

**Is my data private?**

Frames from your camera are sent to our secure server for analysis and are not stored. For composition coaching, frames are processed by a third-party AI service under a strict data agreement — they are never used for training. See our [Privacy Policy](https://www.framecoach.io/privacy).

**Why isn't my camera supported?**

FrameCoach requires cameras with built-in wireless remote control. Not all cameras support this. You can request support for your camera model in the app.

**Does FrameCoach change my camera settings?**

Only if you tap "Apply" on a recommendation. FrameCoach never adjusts settings automatically.

**Is FrameCoach free?**

FrameCoach is free to use with a daily analysis limit. Pro plans coming soon.

## Known Limitations

- Canon cameras require a one-time USB activation of CCAPI before wireless control is available.
- Your camera must support WiFi Direct or WiFi hotspot mode to connect with FrameCoach.
- Some older Sony cameras may not support the Camera Remote API required for FrameCoach.
